Pearl Eudora Hurd went to be with her Savior on October 11, 2025, culminating 96 years of service to her family, church, and community.
Eudora was born on November 28, 1928 to Gerald and Myra Grove. She grew up on a farm just outside of Milford. Daily chores included milking six cows before school and making sure the farm animals were secure in the barn for the night. Eudora attended New Salem Church throughout her life. Her great-grandfather gave the land for building the church. She served as church pianist until she was nearly 90 years old.
A graduate of Milford High School in 1946, she married Robert J. Hurd, her high school sweetheart, on April 25, 1948. Bob and Eudora were blessed with 63 years together. Upon graduation she worked as a secretary at the United Telephone Company until her marriage.
Eudora’s greatest joy was her family. She raised three children, Gary, Brenda, and Rhonda. In 1963, she became part-time secretary for Harold Young at Milford Elementary School. Before long, the job became a full-time responsibility. She loved her job and made many good friends during her 22 years at the school. She continued serving the community as pianist at church and the nursing home in Milford. Eudora also loved teaching children to play the piano for 12 years. Other accomplishments included raising a large vegetable and rose garden, the creation of many beautiful quilts, and occasionally reading. Watching birds and memorizing scripture were a big part of her life.
A woman of deep faith, Eudora is survived by her children: Gary Hurd (Sandy), Brenda Baumgartner (Joe), and Rhonda Dietsch (Dan); six grandchildren, Rachel Schrock, Ashley Kiefer (Dustin) Blair Baumgartner, Myra Weber (Jonathan), and Jeffrey Baumgartner (Megan), Beth Harshman (Dan); eight great-grandchildren, Ella and Drew Schrock, Norah and Emme Weber, Willa and Beau Baumgartner, Dayne and Logan Keifer, and brother Frank (Nancy) Grove.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Hurd, her parents, Gerald and Myra Grove, a sister Berniece Graham, brother-in-law Thomas Hurd, Eldon and Agnes Hurd, and daughter-in-law Pat Hurd.
Her family extends a special thanks to Frank and Nancy Grove, John and Carol Hurd, Gina Deatsman, Phyllis Sorensen, Sandy Hurd, Pastor Tim Yoder, Veronica, and many other family and friends who remembered her with regular visits and prayer. Traditions Hospice was a great comfort to everyone during the last week of Eudora’s life.
