Helen L. Matz

June 20, 1918 — December 14, 2013

Helen L. Stine Matz, 95, formally of Bremen, Indiana, passed away on December 14, 2013 in Ferdinand, Indiana. Helen was born on June 20, 1918 in Bremen to Owen C. and Gladys S. (Abbiehl) Stine. She was the 2nd oldest of 7 children. She graduated in 1936 from Nappanee High School.

Helen was a hard worker. In her younger years she worked as a waitress at the Bremen Hotel. During WWII she worked at Gerber Manufacturing where she sewed back pockets in uniforms and at Koontz Wagner Wire where she wound airplane coils. She was a secretary at the lone Star Boat Company, Bremen SKF Bearing Co. (where she retired from) and Champion Motor Homes. After retirement she continued working many part time jobs.

Helen was a lifelong resident of Bremen and moved to Jasper, Indiana in 1995. She loved to travel and drove to many places in the United States. Josh, her traveling companion, made many trips to Florida with her.

Helen loved her grandchildren and had them visiting often. In younger years, she had gardens of flowers and vegetables, preserving all she grew. She loved sewing and would make all of her children's clothes. One of her bigger handmade projects were the twirler's uniforms of Bremen High School Band.

Surviving are her daughters Shirley Jordan of Seaford, Delaware and Beverly (Daniel) Turnock of Dale, Indiana. Also surviving is a sister Daisy Mae (lavern-deceased) Hollar of Etna Green, Indiana, a brother lowell (Marylou) of Goshen, Indiana, and a sister-in-law Shirley J. Stine of Bremen, Indiana. Surviving her are also 7 grandchildren, Jack Jordon, Beth (Jordan) Woyt, Patrick Turnock, Kelley (Turnock) Johnson, Colleen (Turnock) Wasemann, Kathleen (Turnock) Doan, Christine (Turnock) Kaiser, 15 great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Preceding in death her parents, brothers Otho, Dale, Owen Jr., sister luella Christman, son-in-law Roland Jordan, and grandchild by marriage Gregg Woyt. The family would like to thank Brookside Assisted Living of Jasper, Scenic Hills of Ferdinand, Dr. Sherer, Paula Jochium and Hospice Gentiva of Jasper. Each of you took compassionate care of mom and were very kind to our family. Thank you to Mishler Funeral Home with helping of the arrangements.

A Celebration of Life for Helen will be Saturday, June 21, 2014 in the Bremen Lake of the Woods Conservation building starting at 1:30 PM.
