John J. Heckaman

John J. Heckaman, 74, of Bremen passed away Monday, June 17, 2013 at home. He was born November 29, 1938 to Harrison H. and Elida Ruth (Macomber) Heckaman in Bremen.

John graduated 3rd in the class of 1956 from Bremen High School and went on to honorably serve his country in the National Guard. John chose the farmer's life; he was proud of working the family farm, raising beef cattle, and owning Anne's Fresh Eggs. He was also a beekeeper and a member of the Michiana Beekeepers Association. John is remembered as being highly intelligent about many things. He loved to write and submitted several articles to local newspapers as well as Purdue University. John enjoyed music and loved spending time with his family He was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church of Bremen. He could often be found enjoying a local auction or woodworking, and always with a Leman mint in his pocket.

John is survived by a brother, Gerald Rodney Heckaman of Portland, OR; a sister, Nettie (Donald) Gray of Argos; two nieces, Peggy (David) Johnson of Goshen and Conny (Verle) Nichols of Plymouth; three nephews, Jeffery Balsley of Effie, MN, Perry (Georgia) Balsley of Coldwater, MI, and Tracy (Judy) Balsley of Bremen; and several great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Claude Heckaman; and a sister, Sannah Balsley.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at the Mishler Funeral Home in Bremen. John's niece, Conny Nichols will officiate with burial following in the Bremen Cemetery.

Friends may call on Friday, June 21st from 4-6 PM at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Marshall County Humane Society.
