Richard James, Sr., 89, of Bremen passed away at his home of 61 years in Madison Township on the morning of Sunday, January 13, 2013 after a brief illness. He was born July 29, 1923 to Royal and Cora (Hunsberger) James in Mishawaka. Richard married Violet Freehauf on July 2, 1949.
Richard graduated with the class of 1941 from Mishawaka High School. He went on to honorably serve his country during WWII with the 5th division from October 20, 1943 to July 9, 1945 and was decorated with the Bronze Star for his dedicated service. He was a dairy farmer his entire life and a driver for Standard Oil and Broadback for 17 years. Richard also enjoyed caring for his draft horses.
Richard is survived by his wife, Violet; four sons, Richard James, Jr., Roy James, Clyde (Tammy) James, and Glen (Kathy) James all of Wyatt; nine grandchildren, Sarah (Joe) Shelley, Molly (Dan) Spromberg, Ben (Pam) James, Sam (Amy) James, Holly (Richard) Kimbel, John James, Chrisy (Owen) Sassaman, Dan James, and Matt James; ten great-grandchildren; and a brother, Theodore James of Ocala, FL.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Morgan and a brother, William James.
A funeral service will be held at Mishler Funeral Home in Bremen on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at noon.
Friends may call from 9-12 on Wednesday at the funeral home.
