Richard Eugene Smith, 91, of Bremen passed away on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at Miller's Merry Manor, Warsaw. Richard was the son of Everett and Lucille Smith, born October 28, 1921 in Vermillion County. He married Madge Huff Smith on September 23, 1945, in her home near Bremen. She preceded him in death November 7, 2010.

Surviving are 2 daughters; Linda (Dennis) Burch of Mentone and Pamela (Don) Orr of Noblesville, 5 grandchildren: Dawn (Shawn) Campbell of Bremen, Deanna (Scott) Greene and Deborah Burch of Fort Wayne, David (Kara) Orr of Piedmont, SC and Daniel (Celina) Orr of Dallas, TX. He is also survived by 9 great-grandchildren: Abby and Zach Campbell, Aaron, Isaac, Ellie, and Audrey Greene, Caleb and Silas Orr, and Phoebe Orr. His sister Hilda Myers, Clearwater, FL also survives. His parents and a brother Wayne preceded him in death.

Richard graduated from Perrysville High School and then Purdue University majoring in animal husbandry. He enlisted in the U S Army Air Corp and served in the European theatre. Richard managed a Purdue University research farm concerned with beef cattle feeding. In 1954 he moved to his own farm near Bremen. Richard was active in Bremen United Methodist Church. He served many years as Lay Leader, taught Sunday School, was active on the administrative board, and in United Methodist Men. He served for 35 years as president of Marshall County Farm Bureau and also served on the Extension Board. Richard was president of the Bremen School Board when the high school was built in 1961. He was active in Bremen Kiwanis.

Richard loved his family. He attended school events, 4-H fairs, baseball , football, and soccer games to watch grandchildren and great grandchildren. He patiently taught children to fish. He always enjoyed a day of fishing whether in winter or summer. He fried the fish for many family meals. Richard liked to travel and visited every state.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at Mishler Funeral Home, Bremen. The service will be officiated by Pastor Scott Greene. Burial will follow at the Bremen Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 ? 7 PM on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at Mishler Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bremen United Methodist Church, building fund.
