Helen Elizabeth Carithers, 92, of Bremen, passed away on Friday, April 06, 2012 at Bremen Health Care Center. She was born on April 13, 1919 in New Paris to Gustav and Della Weisshaar.
Helen lived almost all of her life in Bremen, graduating from Bremen High School and then attending college. She taught at elementary schools in Marshall County, Nappanee, and Rochester for 15 years. During World War II she took a break in her teaching career; she worked in the Army Air Corps Office of South Bend for three years doing her part for her country. Helen returned to teaching after the war. She taught for seven more years in the Monroe and Marshall Elementary Schools in South Bend.
On June 27, 1959, Helen married Eugene Carithers. He preceded her in death on December 7, 2010.
As a girl and young woman, Helen was fun-loving and exuberant. She was also very musical and sang in the Salem United Methodist Church choir, often singing duets with her sister Ardis. She had no children, but devoted much of her time caring for family members in their later years.
After Gene's retirement from the post office, they travelled extensively to many foreign countries as well as delivering RVs to many places in the U.S.
Helen is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two sisters Ardis and Ruth, and two brothers Dwight and Stanley.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at 10:00 AM at the Mishler Funeral Home in Bremen. Pastor Chuck Krieg will officiate with burial following the service at Bremen Cemetery.
A time of visitation will take place one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials can be given to the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, and General Board of Global Ministries.
