Delbert P. Whitehead, 89, of Bremen, passed away on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at Riverview Hospital, Noblesville.
He was born on April 10, 1922 to Hallet and Maudie (Fisher) Whitehead in Bremen. On November 12, 1944 he married Joyce Gordon in Nappanee; she preceded him in death in 1978.
Delbert attended Madison High School and joined the U.S. Army, serving in WWII. He returned from war and worked as a carpenter in St. Joseph County all his life. Delbert was an active and positive member of his community, participating in many organizations. He was a member of the Zion Church of Christ in Wakarusa, the American Legion, Madison Township Lion's Club, and a former volunteer of Madison Township Fire Dept. Delbert's family remembers him as a hardworking man that was great with his hands and dedicated to loving his family.
Delbert is survived by two sons Patric (Linda) Whitehead of Barbeau, MI and Bruce (Pamela) Whitehead of Westfield, IN; four granddaughters, Amberly Whitehead, Erin (Andy) Toth, Erica Seasor, Jennifer (Chris) Denison; a grandson Courtney (Beth) Whitehead; a brother Dale Whitehead; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Esther Balsley and two brothers, Lamar Whitehead and Marvin Whitehead.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 18, 2012 at 3 PM with Pastor Dale Speckman officiating at the Zion United Church of Christ in Wakarusa. Burial will follow at South Union Cemetery in Nappanee.
Friends may call two hours prior to the service on Sunday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Madison Township Lion's Club or the Zion United Church of Christ.
