Berthella May Stevens

May 29, 1920 — January 28, 2011

Berthella May Stevens, 90, of Bremen, passed away on January 28, 2011 in Angola.

She was born May 29, 1920 to Effie and Grant Whitmyer, the oldest of three sisters. She married Maurice "Mick" Stevens in 1945, who preceded her in death on June 1, 2010.

Berthella had wide-ranging interests, from the artistic to the academic. She loved music and found pleasure in playing piano for most of her life. With an eye for beauty, she grew colorful gardens of flowers around her home. She was a lover of the written word, treasuring books, newspapers, and magazines, while creating a plethora of her own short stories. Over the years she dabbled in other interests including being a community organizer for an annual CROP Walk, sold investments, and wrote a weekly column in the Bremen Enquirer called The Party Line. She had a strong faith, participated in a regular Bible study, and attended Oak Grove Missionary church for over 50 years. Although Berthella's interests afforded her a very full life, she was devoted to raising her 6 children and providing them a stimulating home environment. In that role she took great pride.

Survivors include Michael Stevens and wife Suzanne of Logansport, Patrick Stevens of Huntsville, AL, Janet Jyoti Weaver of Indianapolis, Dr. Thomas Stevens and wife Donna of Angola, Kerry Stevens and wife Gloria of Austin, TX, Julie DuVal and husband Jerry of Marysville, OH; 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
