Harry L. Shoup formerly of Bremen died Saturday at Providence house in South Bend. He was born November 20, 1918, in Orville, OH to Allen and Lenora Shoup. He graduated from high school in Smithville, OH and attended Goshen College where he met his future wife Betty Birkey. They married on March 30, 1941 in Bremen.
Harry is survived by his daughter, Judith Ann (Lowell) Markley of South Bend; two sons, Brian A. (Diane Kahl) Shoup of Madison, WI and Brent L. (Betsy) Shoup of Neillsville, WI; five grandchildren, Jon (Carol) Markley of Granger, IN, Amy Markley (Mark Sneathen) of Chicago, IL; Michael (Sarah Steffes) Shoup of Fressenden, ND; Katy Peters of Kansas City, KS and Laura (Doug) Arthur of Sheboygan, WI and a great grandson, Logan Peters of Kansas City, KS. Harry is also survived by an extended family that includes Eleanor Shoup of South Bend, Dorothy Shoup of Zeeland, MI, Ida Shoup of Orrville, OH, Philip and Glennis Reidenbach of Bremen, Robert and Arlene Birkey of Plymouth, Carol Boyer of Bremen and Darlene Byler of Raleigh, NC.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Ira Shoup, Arthur Shoup, Walter Shoup, Roy Shoup, Owen Shoup ; three sisters, Ethel Miller, Mabel Calame and Leona Fato.
Harry was employed by Martin's Feed Mills in New Paris, IN retiring after many years as sales manager. He especially enjoyed community service and was a long standing member of the Bremen Kiwanis Club. Harry served on the board of the Community Hospital of Bremen where he headed up special gifts fund raising for the new hospital. He was a volunteer delivering Meals-on-Wheels and also a driver for those needing assistance getting to medical appointments. Harry performed a;; of these commitments respectfully and with a friendly smile.
Harry was a faithful member of the Bremen Church of the Brethren, serving as a deacon for many years. His memorial service will be held at the church at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 3, with visitation for an hour prior to the service. There will also be a visitation on Tuesday, November 2 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Mishler Funeral Home in Bremen.
Memorials may be sent to the Missions Fund of the Bremen Church of the Brethren or Community Hospital of Bremen Foundation.
Harry's family would like to express their gratitude to staff's of Miller's Assisted Living in Wakarusa and Providence House in South Bend. Both cared for Harry with love and compassion during the last four years of his life.
