Berniece Hollar Dwyer

Berniece Hollar Dwyer, age 91, died at 10am on Wednesday, Jan 27, 2010. She was at her home upon passing.

Born September 6, 1918, she was the daughter of Amos and Kathryn Hollar. She was a 1936 graduate of Milford High School and earned degrees from Ball State and Indiana Universities.

While living in Washington D.C. in the mid-40's, she taught in the Foreign Service Institute of the State Dept. Her students were young adults who were assigned tp the embassies and consulates of the United States in foreign countries. Before departing for their posts, they were required to take refresher courses in shorthand, typing and Dept of State correspondence. She was employed by the CIA in an instructional capacity. Other teaching postions were with Ball State and Indiana Universities. She retired in 1985 after teaching 30 years at Goshen High School.

At Goshen High School she taught shorthand, typing , and business courses. The last 15 years she counseled seniors with college plans and applications for financial aide. She also enjoyed editing the school year book, "The Crimson".

A contributing member of the EWye Bank for Sight Restoration of New York City, she urged donations to the Eye Bank of the I.U. Medical Center through her speaking and writing. She was a three-gallon contributor in the Red Cross Volunteer Blood Donor program.

She held a life membership in Delta Pi Epsilon, Nationa Honorary Professional Graduate Society in Business Education and was the first woman granted permission to study in Harvard University's Widener Library while completing requirements for a graduate degree. She served as the secretary of the Milford High School Alumni Association for many years and also held membership in the Audubon Society and Women's Christian Temperance Union. A life-long member of the Bethel Church, she served as organist for over 50 years.

Children are Diane (George) Loya, Meridian, ID, and Kevin (Pam) Dwyer, Milford, IN. There are three grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. Thomas (Edna) Barbour also survives.

Her body has been donated to the I.U. Anatomical Education Program. It was her request that there be no viewing or funeral. A memorial service will be held on Feb. 6, 2010 at the Truth of Word Ministries (formerly the Bethel Church of the Brethren), 210 East Catherine St., Milford.
