Richard Mahnken, Jr., age 73, of Syracuse, passed away at his residence on Friday, February 10, 2006. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on May 12, 1932, to Richard & Irene (Kelly) Mahnken, Sr.

Richard moved back to the area in 1984. He was President and Owner of Heckaman Homes in Nappanee. He was a philanthropist: Financial Advisor and generous contributor for New Beginnings, Advisory Board for the Boys and Girls Club of Ft. Wayne, established and funded the Freedom House Organization in Ft. Wayne, established and funded the Elizabeth A. Mahnken Foundation, U.S. Army Korean Veteran, graduate of Brooklyn Prep High School, received a Bachelor's Degree from Brooklyn College and an MBA from Columbia University in New York.

Survivors include 2 daughters: Elise (John) Mock of Allentown, Pennsylvania, Debra (Robert) Mahnken Renninger of Douglassville, Pennsylvania, 2 sons: John (Anne) Mahnken of Syracuse, Stephen Mahnken of Charleston, West Virginia, 10 grandchildren: Murielle, Anthony, Chris and Siobhan Mahnken, Kelly Duffy, Justin, Billy and Caitlin Lukens, Michael (Delores) Ulrich and Matthew Ulrich, 1 great grand daughter: Ariel Elyse Ulrich, 1 sister: Adrien (James) Callahan of Florida, 1 brother: Paul Mahnken of New York. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother: Mark.

Services will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2006, at 11:00AM at the Mishler-Eastlund Funeral Home, Harris Chapel, in Syracuse. Rev. David Herr will officiate. Burial will follow at the Syracuse Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8PM Tuesday and 2 hours prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be given to the Mahnken Scholarship Foundation.
